Happy New Year from all of us at The Accountancy People. My theme for the New Year is your relationship with your business:
It happens far too often, several times a month. It needs to be talked about. There is a secret in the business community that I want to expose. I speak to loads of business owners and once or twice a month I speak to someone whose relationship with their business has broken down. I can see the symptoms easily enough:
- Red eyes from not sleeping
- Weight gain
- Stress and anxiety
You see for us business owners our businesses are hugely important to us. They are an integral part of our lives. When our businesses flourish so do we. But things can go wrong:
- Disloyal staff
- Unpleasant customers
- Unhelpful staff (having a great life or problems, doesn’t always revolve around staff?)
- Red tape…
As business owners we can get inundated with work. And when that happens we can fall out of love with our business but at the same time we are financially and emotionally committed to its success. I don’t believe this is talked about enough. So, what to do?
I have been through this and if you want to talk to me, please do. But my advice is to constantly work at your relationship with your business. If you accept that you are likely to be involved in your business for a long time to come, it becomes essential that you have a good relationship with it. Like any long term relationship it requires work. I would implore you to understand where your business annoys you, upsets you, worries you…..and deal with these things.
Just change one thing at a time, so you are actively improving how your business feels for you working in it, step by step. This will help you have the long-term relationship with it that you need.
Have a great New Year
